Had a great time this year!

Postby Eleke » Sun Nov 02, 2014 4:15 pm

Like the title said, I had a blast this year. Everything seemed to go so smoothly: I was in the pre-reg line on Thursday and the regular reg line on Friday (my brother has a developmental delay and is unable to go by himself, and we didn't know if he'd be able to come long after pre-reg ended) and once the line started moving it kept going at a smooth pace. I got in line around 10:30ish on Friday and had my badge in hand within 15 minutes, which I wont complain about.

Going into panels was a breeze, and I love the gap between panels - it keeps people from crashing panel A so they can get a good seat in much-more-popular panel B, but it also doesn't punish people who were interested in both A *and* B by requiring people to clear out of A, and then they're last in line for B.

Having People Mover passes for sale right next to reg was a brilliant move - no searching around trying to find it.

The only wrinkle was that on Saturday night the down escalator to the first floor broke, and security wouldn't let people just use them as stairs so people had to get in line for the elevators just to go down one floor. I don't know how long that lasted because I pretty much just went to Cobo for the rest of the night before returning to my room, but eh. In any case, that was a hotel SNAFU, not a con one.

All in all, I had no complaints about the con. Can't wait to show up next year!

My comments are pretty small this year. I am so glad you guys took all the advice about the rave. The music was way better, and none of that stupid dubstep. I'm glad the DJ this time held back on his microphone yelling. Thank you.

The only thing I'd really like to ask is that next year we get our nice laminated badges back? These ones with the plastic were better than last year, but since I've been going to these cons for nine years, it's a major downgrade. You'd think with how much the con is growing and how much revenue it pulls, Youmacon can afford at least some nicely laminated badges.

Ok so here is my official Youmacon review of Youmacon X. Instead of just bitching about what was wrong ill also give props to what was done right. im gonna break it all into parts. some things were minor and some were major but in the end it all adds up

REGISTRATION: This was done perfectly. the lines moved really REALLY fast and it was very nice to just be able to breeze right though it. i been going to youma since 09 and trust me when i say i know what a shitty reg line can be like

SCHEDULE: Its a minor thing but you know how the prev schedules had some kind of art on the front? what the hell was this **** this year? we got a white book with the youmacon x logo. Also on the topic of the schedule, where the **** was the actual schedule. you know the thing that the book is made for? I did get the print out but isnt that supposed to be in the book. hence the name of the **** book

DEALERS ROOM/AA: Again this was done correctly. very roomy with room to spare. like last year i didnt feel smashed and or rushed however i do feel they could have left it open a bit longer but thats a minor thing

PANELS: i liked that they gave a half hour for panels to breakdown and set up. HOWEVER there was way less panles then prev years and i have the prev scheduals to prove this point. Panels are kinda a reason alot go to youma and this year there was so few

GAME ROOM / ARCADE ROOM: If you really wanna call them that. i was very upset with how these rooms turned out. Normally there a big part of my con experience but this year we didnt have the pinballs or battle pods for example and if you combined bot rooms. it wouldnt even be half of what last years GR was. I talked to a tech staff member on saturday and said that it was utter chaos and even they werent happy with how it turned out

AUTOGRAPHS: more about the lines for autographs. I would line up 2 hours prior to the requested guest. i would be somewhere between 4-10 in line which is **** good but in the end. IT NEVER **** MATTERED!!!! heres why

FRI: waited in line for 2 hours then the platinum started moving. platinum NEVER had there stuff ready and waited to get to the guest before doing so. then they proceded to play 20 questions with the guy. One guy held up the line for 15 min and chatted with laura landa and staff said nothing. After platinum had there 30 min priority the normal line still didnt move. after a hour....nothing. So a woman asked when we were moving and the woman said and i qoute "it will move when im ready for it to move"
i was there for landa, douglas and JYB and finally with only 15 min of autograph time left. we started moving. i got the first 2 but wasnt able to move down the line fast enough to get to JYB. mind you i was number 10 in line

SAT: i was in line for Patrick (cause he was a no show on fri). and JYB. this time i was number 4 in line. again the line was botched. platinums got 50 minute priority and then the staff went down the line and said "if your here for just patrick line here, just johnny then here, etc" these peole "who in total outnumbered those who wanted to see multiple guests" went first
with literally only 10 min left on the clock. i was able to get to patrick then run to JYB line for the autographs. WTF is the point of lining up originally then?

SUN: youma must have noticed that something wasnt right cause the Steve Blum line ran ALOT smoother. it ran like a line was supposed to and for that i thank them

CONCLUSION: most of my youmacon time was spent in the **** **** autograph line and had things ran like they were supposed to. that wouldnt have been the case. Hell i couldnt even make it to the con feedback panel cause of the **** autograp line!!!!! Ever since 09 Youmacon has been going downhill and im not the only con-goer or staff for that matter to think that. Unless they do something, there won't be a Youmacon 20.
I forgave youmacon forgave youmacon for 2012 and this year was supposed to be the year they blow my mind, but this year goes right up there with 2012. maybe even past it cause i was at least able to enjoy 2012.

For a few years i been debating on rturning to youma but they always get someone i wanna see. but guests only get you so far. That being said...i love you youma, i really do, your my home away from home but unless you REALLY and i mean REALLY sell me next year or get someone i would give one of my kidneys for then im afraid i wont be returning. this was just to much of a dissapointment

This con was pretty great -- but I have a few complaints, one of which is not the convention's fault, but I think I'll still mention it for anyone else that reads this thread.

Do not stay at the Greektown Casino if you have party members under 21. We reserved rooms there because all the other hotels connected to the People Mover were full(!) when we remembered we needed to reserve rooms. The casino, being a casino, requires a $100 deposit on check-in that they do not tell you about, and although the building is attached to the People Mover, they failed to mention that you have to walk 100 feet through the casino to get to it (in Michigan, you have to be 21 to get into a casino.) You can literally see the People Mover from the ID check. In spite of this, no one will bother to escort you there, and instead you have to walk three blocks through an incredible feat of wind tunnel engineering in usually below 50 degrees. It's freezing cold, especially if you don't have a coat because you didn't think you'd need it. I'm honestly surprised I didn't get sick the first day of the convention.

Edit: You'd think that the selfish bastards, knowing that Youmacon is going on and they're getting business from it, would at least set up a line for cosplayers to run through to get to the monorail. If anything, that's the kind of action Youmacon should take to work with them.

Youmacon can't do anything about that, so I'm not complaining. Just don't stay there. However... Youmacon can do something about the requirement of PHOTO ID (emphasis added) for the 18+ panels. I just turned 18 this year and was really excited to go with my friends, who are all older than me, to the Team Four Star panel. However, I don't have a driver's license yet for personal but by no means acrimonious reasons. Even so, I have still been able to get into bars and whatnot by carrying two other cards that can verify my name and age (namely, a driver's permit and my insurance card.) Apparently this was not enough to get through the door, but no one thought to inform me of that until I had waited a half hour in line and gotten right to the door. To be honest, I didn't mind that much, except they also turned away another poor girl (who was obviously at least 22) who, as I discovered in talking later, had accidentally left her driver's license home in Pennsylvania when her boyfriend drove up with her. (On the bright side, talking to them I didn't feel totally alone after having to walk away and telling my friends to go on in anyway, but the poor thing was just sobbing for a few minutes because that was one of the main reasons they drove up.)

I realize it's important to maintain state law and be reputable, but that was ridiculous.

Also, there was a distinct lack of food/water around Cobo Hall later Saturday evening. After I was turned away from the Team Four Star panel, I wandered around Cobo looking for something to drink (because I realized I needed it badly), and their food court was totally closed. Furthermore, there seemed to be no vending machines anywhere, except for one, which charged $3(!) per bottle of Coke and was not working properly, so it only took quarters. No other change, just quarters. Having spent all my quarters at the monorail, that didn't work, so I walked all the way to the back of the building where I knew there was a water fountain.

With those things in mind, I will say that the Dealer's Room was great -- nice and roomy, enough to take photos and also admire swords from several angles ;) Registration, which I've had a phobia of ever since 2012, was fabulous, although a lot of my friends said the schedules had run out when they registered Saturday afternoon.

The site: I don't see how the way the forums were handled this year is acceptable. The site/forum wasn't updated for 2014 until just a couple months ago. Normally they're good to go by around April 1. Questions in several sections went unanswered for MONTHS at a time, and some still haven't been answered. There was absolutely no staff presence whatsoever. Shout out to lunaslayer13 for showing up in the past month or so to try to help out, but it was still too late. People shouldn't have to go to a Facebook page, official or unofficial, to get things done. The website itself should have the highest priority. For it being the 10th anniversary, there was literally zero hype generated for this year.

Schedule: Rather disappointing all around. The schedule itself was lackluster. It being posted just three days before the convention is laughable. The schedule being separate from the book...I can't even comprehend that. Maybe some people don't like to carry around the book just for the schedule, which is fine, but for it to not have the schedule at all is seriously disappointing. And on the online schedule, some things such as the video game tournaments weren't even posted.

Game room: Lots of open space, perhaps too much. Nothing of real interest. The arcade room was an utter letdown.

Dealer's room: Really great layout. Artist's Alley could have been given another foot or so between aisles, but still really nice layout. Super bummed there were no tables to sit at to eat there (and also at the lack of food available). Even the Wintergarden was missing a ton of tables. I'm sure those aren't really the fault of Youmacon itself, but still disappointing.

About the escalator -- it's not even a hotel issue, it's an insurance one. Legally, if the escalator is not working, it's broken. If someone gets hurt on it while it's broken, that's a liability, and the injured could say that he was hurt because the escalator was broken, therefore having every legal right to sue for it.

Hope that clears it up :) Not saying that wasn't annoying (I dealt with it too) but it makes it understandable at least.

My biggest thing was like others there was not a Schedule posted in the big white book. It took us till Saturday morning to even find out they were being handed out in the Registration line and then we had to have someone go in and get a few for our group. I know it's a shock but not everyone has a smart phone so you can't say, just look it up on your phone. A hard copy is much better and I think is still easier to keep on oneself.

Registration worked very well. There were lots of people directing the huge line on Friday to make sure people knew where to go and once we got to the front it went very easy.

There was a very big area in the Dealers Room right where you came in from Registration that was empty that would have been a great place for some tables and chairs. Especially considering COBO was selling food right there. But just a place to sit that's not on concrete would have been nice. I know this is something that Youmacon probably can't help, but the food and drink prices at COBA are ridiculous! $3.00 for what they call a large soda that at any fast food place today would be considered a small size. While it was nice they had a food court, $10 for a food court hamburger is kinda steep. Like I said that's probably a COBO thing but it's at least worth bringing up when you talk to COBO again next year.

I had a really great time at Youmacon this year. The costumes were amazing, people were super nice to me, and most were polite about taking photos as well. I really liked the fact that it seemed a bit busier than last year too! I got a pass for the People Mover, and agree that having an area next to registration to purchase the pass was a fantastic idea. Aside from the Dealer's Room, I did not participate in any other activities that required a badge (I did go INTO the gameroom, but I only watched people... :D ), so I really cannot offer input on any of those events. But like I said, I had an amazing time, and I didn't want to leave... :( I almost want to say that this year was my favorite.

However, I do feel that the convention was just as disorganized as always (if not more so). I know everybody was busy though, and GM's rules didn't help to make things any less stressful, but I wasn't even made aware of the fact that a physical copy of the programming/schedule even existed! There were some things I would have liked to have known about before they happened, but unfortunately I was left clueless (we tried accessing information on the website via mobile phone, but that attempt proved to be fruitless as well). Perhaps that information could be handed out at registration? Oh, and speaking of registration, Friday's Registration line was extremely long...but that can't be helped! Other than those minor details, I really have no complaints.

Youmacon is my home away from home. I love it sooo much! I'm already counting down the days until it starts again!!! Thank you sooooooooo much for bringing us this amazing event!!!

See you all next year!

Alright. So i lost my 3 day badge but it was found and turned into staff at the Dealer'r room. When i went to go pick it up, she told me she had give my badge to someone else and then proceeded to give me a lost badge that did not belong to me. If you guys were trying to prevent people taking advantage of lost badges you failed with this one. I dont know what she was thinking but she did not care to confirm the right badges went to the right people. I got a badge but I was very upset that this was handled quite carelessly. I should not have been given a badge that did not belong to me due to the carelessness of a staff member.

This was my first year at Youmacon and I enjoyed it a lot. The venue was great and it was efficient getting back and forth between the Ren-Cen and Cobo.

The only problems I had were;
I wish, for the panels, there were signs that would show the separate lines for platinum and the general line. I wasn't platinum, but I waited in those lines not knowing it was the platinum line and then being told later that is was and then having to go to the back of the general line that I thought was for a different panel. The panel lines in the Ren-Cen tended to get confusing.

A sign outside of the door of Hall C to say that pre-registration could get in there ahead of the general registration line would have been nice too, consider the line for registration was winding through the lobby.

The other thing was I wish the food courts were open later than they were, but I don't know if Youmacon can control that.

It was a really great con and things were pretty manageable to get around overall, I was very happy to see the People Mover passes so close to the Dealers Room entrance, it was really convenient.
My main issue was Friday morning for the reg/pre-reg lines. We spent 1/2 an hour staying in the reg line because there was no real sign or anything for anyone to go for pre-reg and everyone we asked told us that we were in the right line, it was a mess. That and the Pre-Reg people were extremely rude to us and very pushy. I know they were tired and probably very stressed because of everything going on but they were very snappy and impolite with us about it so it put a bit of a damper on us.
That and the video game room seemed a lot emptier than it had last year, but it was also in different rooms so it makes sense, but again small things, overall the con was amazing and I cannot wait for next year!

I was really happy with it, since it was my first con. I was just dissapointed that with all their fighting video games there wasn't Soul Calibur at all, :( as big as it is.

I found a Nikon camera with a blank badge in the food court Saturday just before the rave.
I turned it to con ops but there's a distinctive mark on the camera that can easily be identified by the owner so if it's anyone's you would know, please tell them it is in lost and found

Just a note, any lost and found items we had at the rencen, would have been turned over to the hotel after we finished loading out last night.
