Over the years I've been videotaping, I've learned a lot about getting a better image with my video camera. And it's not nearly as dependent on having HD as you might think.
Basically, while a lot of people realize that webcams and many youtube uploads don't look the best, I'm not sure if many realize the reason is mainly because they are over exposed and out of focus, not as much to do with resolution.
If you want your videos to look MUCH BETTER use the manual focus and manual exposure (or AE shift) on your camera. If your camera doesn't have those features (and many cheap consumer ones sadly don't these days), you're being cheated out of the best possible image no matter how big it says HD on the side. I've mostly used a Hi8 camera over the years and I used the auto focus for a long time and figured the blurriness was mainly because of the low tape resolution. But what I was seeing was that the picture was never really fully in focus.

This is a youtube screengrab of the closing ceremonies of 2009 Youmacon from someone else's channel. I think they might have posted here so I'm not trying to diss or anything. This simply was the best example of video I could find that I also recorded with a similar angle. I don't know what camera was used

This is from the same part of the closing ceremony, taken off my youtube upload. I used a Hi8 TRV-75 analog camera.

Now since these were both screen capped off youtube, the original quality was a lot better. However, even though the Hi8 format only had about the same resolution capability as S-VHS and laserdisc, it can do better on the manual settings than a miniDV or similar on auto because the image captured in the camera lens is much better to start with.
The manual settings can be especially valuable when the image you want is under a much brighter light than the rest of the field. (such as a spotlight on stage) Worse, if you're in a crowd and someone stands up in front of you, the camera will frequently try to open the exposure for their light level and focus on them. And while the idea of having to continually adjust the focus might sound intimidating, it really is much more forgiving than you would think and is usually much sharper than auto even if you set it a little off. And that rarely happens unless you zoom in a lot which you won't need to do as much because things won't appear as blurry in a wide view. And a wider angle does not highlight camera jitter as much so your video can look steadier too.

So again, I'm not trying to mock anyone or insult other people. I just want to pass along some valuable information I wish had been explained to me much sooner. Heck, even a webcam would probably look 100 times better if it let you control the focus and exposure.
It will be like you upgraded your equipment for free.
No one else can see things like I do.
