to repeat what a lot of people are saying, the key to Detroit (if you're still feeling nervous) is to just keep to groups and DON'T let your nerves get to you. that's the biggest thing. especially the area the con is in, is not all that bad. granted i grew up just outside of Detroit and not in the city itself, but I've been going there for YEARS with school groups and my family. just stick to groups, which with a con shouldn't be too difficult :)

Never had an issue with the area, we are actually staying right round where you are, maybe a few blocks further from the con. Stay in a group if you don't feel comfortable walking around by yourself. I usually end up spending some time away from my group and navigating on a bit on my own, and I've never been messed with. And if we end up walking back around the same times, we'll even give you a Spartan escort to your hotel if you feel you need one.

Honestly it's not as bad as people make it out to be. Downtown Detroit is actually really safe (compared to other parts :skeptical: )
but it's all about common sense. If you're walking alone from cobo to ren cen or vice versa, find a group of cosplayers and ask
to walk with them. ^.^ I can guarantee they will let you. While I can sit here and tell you you'll be fine, as I stated, it's all about common sense.
Yes I am honestly scared of Detroit, but I feel safe in Downtown. There's usually cops all over that area and at youma they are supposed
to have stepped up security.

Richard, Crumple, I'd just like to say I'm glad you came out to give input.

I've lived here my whole life and been to downtown quite a few times, I've never had any problems. Infact I feel safer around Cobo and the Ren Cen than I did in **** Dearborn.

You should be fine, just stick to the main roads and convention/hotel area. Alleys are generally a bad idea in any major city.

Hey, from the perspective of an actual Detroiter, it's not that bad, and I don't think that you have anything to worry about. Most of downtown Detroit is relatively safe and well patrolled. Even late at night, the chances of something like that happening are very slim, unless you're very unlucky. If you really want, you can walk with a group of people to feel more comfortable and reduce the chances of a confrontation (which again, I repeat, are very slim). I'm just saying that you should have nothing to worry about. Some of the bad things you hear about Detroit may be true, but it's not like walking straight through a war-zone. It's actually quite safe. I hope you have a wonderful con experience.

Downtown Detroit is fairly safe compared to the rest of Detroit. I know a lot of people in Detroit will defend it to the death, but I do think Detroit is a pretty rough city, I'm not going to try to deny it. But not ALL areas of Detroit are like this. Detroit has tourist attraction areas on top of it's world wide reputation for being rough. Therefore you will find more police where there is more people, attractions, sight seeing, events, etc. So downtown is well monitored to protect those who are coming for a leisurely visit. Any advice I could give is I'd give while in ANY city because something can happen to you in any city.

1. Never travel alone. Travel in at least pairs, or for extra safety, at least a group of three. Or make sure you have a guy walking with you. Not trying to gender stereotype, but I just always feel more comfortable if a guy is walking with me.

2. Never travel late at night. If anything, it's because the area has bars, and you will probably run into drunk people. Drunk people may not really do anything to you, they may pester you, but you have an advantage of being sober and in control of your motor skills.

4. Stay on main roads when walking, mildly greet anyone you see and pass, do not fiddle with your phone, have a good grasp on whatever it is that you're carrying.

5. Carry pepper spray if need be.

Other than that, downtown Detroit, especially on the weekends with a huge con going on, it really isn't that bad. You have tourists, baseball fans depending on how the Tigers are doing, and lots and lots of con goers and the streets are never bare. This can be a good thing as there plenty of people around to witness anything that goes down so people are probably less likely to attempt something. And judging by my commute around the city before, you will never be alone or without people who can help. There will always be con goers or tourists or a police officer present.

Many of the rumors about Detroit are pretty untrue. Most of the crimes committed are robberies. I've heard several rumors people believe that crimes are non-stop in Detroit and there's shootings literally all the time, untrue. Many of the crimes involved people that knew each other and involved an argument. Most of which are not downtown and take place in the outer neighborhood areas.
Clink here for the current interactive map showing Detroit crimes since May 2012. The closest dots (of which there are only a couple in a several block radius around the Renaissance center) that took place closest to the current date was from back in June and it involved people that knew each other and were arguing.
I should add that Flint, MI is ranked higher on the most dangerous cities list.

I use to live near downtown Detroit for school and I was from a rather small town beforehand.
If you happen to be walking around after dark, pepper spray in case of any emergency. However, most of the time, it's just the homeless people that you should possibly be worried about. I have not seen many hanging around downtown during the day, but I have seen a few at night recently.
I know it sounds very awful, but you should ignore them. Do not give them anything and don't stare at them as you pass, they will follow you to where you go and try to ask you for more later on. This has happened to me before and it was a common problem with where I went to school there. This was the solution teachers and the security staff gave us. The people that had followed me never got violent in any capacity, but it was just creepy and you just never know.

The points that Ki_chan outlined are superb and anyone scared of any city should take note of them.
I would also add that when walking in groups and especially if you're alone(Don't do), try not to carry tons of stuff.

Girls, those of you wearing short skirts and/or low cut tops or overall in an attractive cosplay that shows a decent amount of skin, I would personally wear a hoodie or some sort of jacket if you plan on walking around. Basically, drunk people and the average person walking down the street will notice you more and are more likely to try to start up a conversation with you.

I doubt anyone will run into any sort of trouble with how close the hotels are to the convention. If you're in a hotel further away, drive and use the Port Atwater parking structure right across the street from the Renaissance center.

DOOD!
I can assure you, you have nothing to worry about, EVEN IF you have to walk a little ways away from the GM building WITH someone [always with someone] Its not suggested, however I can't stress enough to you how safe Youma is.

The area Youmacon is in is one of the safest places in Detroit. The RenCen is GM's headquarters and is swarming with security and cops.

I stepped onto RenCen property with a camera before and I had security on me in seconds asking where my paper work was to film/photograph.

I've even walked around downtown Detroit during dusk/night with only one other friend before and no one even looked at us.

Just as with any other large city (during the day and at night) stay in well lit places. Stay where you can be seen by any one and everyone (people aren't going to do anything to you if they are more likely to be caught) and stay with your friends. Just exercise common sense and you'll be just fine.

But I think as long as you stay close to the center and don't wander into the half-dead Motor City, you'll be fine.

Then i suggest never going to any major urban area, ever. I've been to dozens for vacation and business, and seen far worse than anything ive seen in Detroit (ever) in cities that are supposedly safer. Big cities (all of them) can be dangerous. Most of them are also a lot safer than any news report would have you believe. Just use common sense, walk in groups, and stick to main streets. Youll be fine, particularly in Downtown, which is heavily patrolled by the DPD and has 3 other major government law enforcement agencies within a mile as well (Homeland, FBI, Custom and Border Patrol) - and the CBP guys patrol the area along the river IN ADDITION to the DPD.

People might say that nothings going on near the con, but there's always something going on. Right out the front door you will see homeless people sleeping on vents, you will see cop cars speeding past. You can always take the people mover to get around places saver but your still going to see stuff going on. Just bring protection. Go with friends. Keep Walking. I mean I jogged from my hotel one night from the con and I saw someone laying on the street and a ambulance next to them, homeless all over where I went and people trying to stop me. It's still Detroit. There's a reason why it's number 6 of the 100 most dangerous cities in America.

I think this goes for every big city. Detroit might be ranked one of the most dangerous cities, but most everything that goes on to make it so is not right in the downtown area that we will be in. And seeing cop cars speeding down the road? The Police station is literally right down the road. You could have seen an ambulance in any city with someone laying next to it. Homeless people are everywhere. I'm not saying nothing is going to be around the con. There will be homeless. There will be suspicious looking people and there will be cop cars, but that doesn't mean you need to be on high alert for every single thing and let that ruin your time.

Yes, it's good to exercise caution and stay in groups and whatnot, but don't blame everything on the fact that "it's still Detroit". I've walked through downtown quite a few times, once at night by the bars and whatnot. I've walked around in cosplay. I'm a tiny white girl... probably a good target for anyone who wanted to do anything, but never once did anyone ever approach me. Sure, I was always with at least one other person, as is common sense, but downtown Detroit is much safer than people think. It's once you leave the area and you start getting to the burned down buildings and destroyed homes that you really need to watch yourself.

They do actually base it off of the frequency and amount of crimes.
